Tribal Taiko Project

Taiko Sessions in South Derbyshire

The Tribal Taiko Project is a collaboration between Tribal Vibes and James Barrow from Taiko West. James is responsible for teaching and leading, and I am responsible for administration, organising and co-ordinating the sessions.

The Taiko sessions take place on a monthly basis on a Saturday at Gresley Old Hall in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire, and are open to adults (over 16's).
There are two sessions throughout the day -

  • Beginners/Improvers session (morning)
  • Intermediate (afternoon)

History of the Group:

The first taster session was held in September 2015 at Gresley Old Hall. This was fully booked up and subsequently led to monthly sessions being arranged due to level of interest from participants wishing to continue to learn and progress.

In June 2016 at the Festival of Leisure in Swadlincote, a group of 17 Taiko players did their first public performance. At the event, James also provided two workshops for children and adults to have a go at Taiko.

In January 2017 we expanded from one session to two sessions per month, to meet the demand for spaces. There are now two groups - Beginners/Improvers and Intermediate, both groups practice on the same day once a month. Both groups performed once again at the Festival of Leisure in 2017, showcasing what they had learned throughout the year.

The Taiko sessions take place once a month at Gresley Old Hall, usually on a Saturday (occasionally on a Sunday). The cost is 20 (for 2.5 hours) and spaces are
pre-book only. A 5 deposit is required to secure your space, for more information about how to book and pay a deposit, please contact me via the contact page.
